This project is an exploration of internal and external experiences characteristic to travel and displacement. It grew from a research residency at the Sydney College for the Arts (Sydney, Australia) in September/October 2009. During our stay, we researched urban, as well as more sparsely populated coastal and inland geographies of New South Wales. Starting from our personal exploration and interviews of others, we looked for indications of what it is like to live in a place; to call it home, and at displacement / shifts evoked by the experience of physically repositioning oneself in the world.
Our research began from the perspective of examining the concept of home and what it means to individuals. As the project developed, we found that it evolved into a discussion of memory and presence, of being in the world. The process brought us to the realization that what we take with us might not be as important as what, or whom we sometimes leave behind. As we move ahead, friends, family and familiar surroundings move into memory; sometimes, that is the only way to experience them again. As the nature of living leads us forward, we are constantly required to face current events and circumstances; to grow and evolve within the present. In essence, this is also part of the discussion of nomadism and contemporary life.
- Valerie LeBlanc & Daniel Dugas, 2010
Daniel Dugas & Valerie LeBlanc's collaborative artistic practice includes media projects, performances and writing. The social and political aspects of the world, and the technological changes that continue to augment reality are the revolving pivots on which that practice revolves. At the heart of all their activities is the desire to establish a rapport between what is experienced and what is imagined; the conscious and the unconscious. The underpinning motivation is to move communication forward.

This installation offers the viewer a glimpse of both the artifice in cinema and the construction of representation in art practice. The viewer brackets causal explanation and analysis to experience the total effect of the work, including the cinematic narrative of their own presence within the process. The gap between Turriff’s artistic intention and the performative aspects of the installation enacted by the audience provides a space in which the viewer may (re)introduce meaning and interpretation of/for the installation. In participating, the viewer claims a place in an old growth forest, however fictive.
ROBERT TURRIFF is currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia. He graduated in 2009 from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. Turriff’s artwork is situated at the intersection of art and craft, informed by his experience as a film industry technician and as an artist.

Between Vessels by Jill Ho-You
January 11 to February 18, 2012
Opening reception: Friday, January 13th at 6:30pm
The exhibition Between Vessels addresses the notion of memory and its corporeal manifestations. The work questions the intimate relationship between our physical and psychological selves, and investigates how memory is embodied in our material being.
By contrasting the analytic, scientific views of the body with the reality of the convoluted, experienced body, Between Vessels speculates on the ways in which personal memory, emotion and cognition are expressed through our physical selves. The prints envision the body – the organs, tissues and cells – as sites where our memories and experiences are encoded without conscious recollection.
Jill Ho-You holds degrees in Psychology and Art from the University of Calgary and is currently a MFA candidate at the University of Alberta in Printmaking. Through the media of printmaking, installation and drawing, Ho-You’s work explores the physical manifestation of memory, building on detailed anatomical studies of the human body. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at Southern Graphics Council International in St. Louis, MO (2011 Award Winner), a solo exhibition at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA (2011), and at the International Print Trienniale in Krakow/Poznan, Poland (2009).

UAS Satellite Gallery - 343 11th Ave SW
Closing reception on Saturday, February 4 @ 6-10PM
Pin-ups are mass-produced images of idealized sex symbols, intended to be "pinned up" to a wall. They are cut out of magazines and newspapers, or postcards and calendars. From the classic charms of Betty Garble, to the fetish modelling of Bettie Page, our version of the "pin-up" has changed over the ages and has accumulated over a century worth of history. 35 artists have worked within the confines of a "poster" format, showing a diversity of artist's interpretations through the themes of feminism, sexuality and popular culture.

James Bannerman (1957-2009) was uniquely situated to capture a street-level view of urban Calgary. First introduced to photography as a client at The Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre in 2006, he was rarely seen afterwards without the backpack containing his precious camera, laptop and photo files; picture taking was going to be his 'retirement plan'. The photographs he left behind speak compassionately about the intrinsic value of incorporating creative activity into daily life.
The Compassionate Eye of James Bannerman is being presented as part of the This Is My City Festival, an interdisciplinary festival of art from the margins. Festival runs from January 5 - May 2, 2012, in Calgary's downtown core. For additional information: www.thisismycitycalgary.ca
